Good Night Fair Traders

Fir Traders Union has helped put out some really great music that includes M. Pyres, Molly Shannon, Molly Shannon, Ocean Bump!, and Castles. They're finally closing down shop, but worry not as they are reemerging as Patient Sounds, with much larger plans for the future. In order to commemorate some of the awesome bands they've worked with they've collected together two zip files worth of tracks that they love. There are some incredible gems on these two collections, so you don't want to miss out.

Denver Show And Tell: TV Themes

Last month I told you about the Denver Show And Tell Project, where every month Denver artists record new tracks that fit a specific theme. This month's theme was TV Theme Songs, and Denver's finest have come through with some awesome tunes. As always, if you're a Denver local make sure to sign up for this month.

Luna Luna

London's Wolf Tapes recently sent me their Luna Luna cassette and it's just plain fantastic. They conjure to mind Salem with a more upbeat sound if one can imagine that possible. Here are both sides of Luna Luna for all your listening pleasure.

Mushrooms In A Glass House

Jamaica the Band does tropical lo-fi in an extraordinary way. I really don't know what more to say on the matter. These jams are highly infectious. I'm just hoping for an LP soon. This is the kinda stuff that should make people dance at a party, in only the freakiest sorts of ways, and that is a truly great thing.

Tested To Comply

Kyle Warden, aka Devices Disguised, is hands down one of the illest experimental beat producers I've heard in some time. He lists artists such as Holy Fuck, Four Tet, and RZA as his influences, so you at least know he's coming from a good place. After you snag the tracks below check out the video for "TVNZ", put together by Josh Warden.

MP3 ::

Sun Burn

Italic Indian is summery, droning noise at it's very best. "Sun Burn" builds layer upon layer, and then half way through the song seemingly breaks apart and starts building with a new set of layers in a manner that is purely fantastic. Keep an eye out for the group's debut 12" this spring, and let this track tide you over until then.

Head to Mirror Universe now to reserve your copy. These are strictly limited to 100 copies, so act fast. Hear are a couple of tracks from it.

Luv Goon on the High Road

A couple of weeks ago Pearl Harbor put the beautiful, hazy "Luv Goon" on their myspace, and now today P4K brings us the mp3 of the track. On top of that the girls have added another new track to their myspace today titled "High Road", which gets even more dreamy. You can catch both tracks on the upcoming Something About the Chaparrals, out soon on Mexican Summer.

MP3 :: Pearl Harbor - Luv Goon
STREAM :: Pearl Harbor - High Road

Video :: Taken By Trees - My Boy

P4K put up this video to accompany the Animal Collective cover by Victoria Bergsman, aka Taken By Trees. I almost feel like by the end of the video she is just bragging that she can walk a tightrope, but it's way cool regardless.

This Land Is Mine

Weekly Tape Deck just got the scoop on this awesome new track from Dana Jewell. "This Land Pt.3" picks up where Liam the Younger's "This Land Pts.1&2" leave off. Jewell says he did kinda rip off the melody from Real Estate's "Green River", but the track is still beautiful, and is probably my new favorite Dana song. You can find the track on his upcoming split with Blanket Truth, appearing jointly from Wild Animal Kingdom and Lost Sound Tapes.

MP3 :: Dana Jewell - This Land Pt.3

------------

Speaking of Dana's Wild Animal Kingdom Records, he has a pretty awesome thing going on right now with the Monthly Mix-Tape Club. Every month you can have delivered to your door an awesome new mix-tape, curated by some way awesome folks. The upcoming October one will be curated by Alex from Leftist Nautical Antiques so hurry up and head here to sign up. Dana has even made it easy for those who missed out on the first month and made it so you can now sign up for the next 11 months, and not pay for an extra tape that's not there. It's only 16.50 for all 11 months! If you need any more incentive, there will also be some upcoming tapes from Chocolate Bobka and myself, so go sign up!

Buffet Your Way To A Better Life

It's Saturday y'all, so that means party time. And what's a great party without great music? Well you don't need to worry about it because Wilmington's finest DJ, Lord Walrus, along with his pal Tons O' Guns have put together this fine mixtape for your distinct listening pleasure. You dudes trying to party or what?

Monkey Zoo Gossip

The always amazing Friendship Bracelet just hooked it up with these sweet jams from Woven Tales. FB describes the tunes as what might be the precursor to a storm, and that definitely makes enough sense to me. This is music to float to; music to drift with. This is the sound of the most brilliant sunny day you've ever known.

You have to love it when a filmmaker can perfectly translate the feeling of a song into something visual. Big ups to Chase Heavener, and thanks to recent favorite Small Estuaries for the tip off.

A Kid's Love Song

I first heard of Patrick Jeffords, aka Kid Trails, from the Weekly Tape Deck fellows. After repeated listens I've become even more enamored by his music. Jeffords comes from the currently blossoming music scene in Columbia, SC, and has a tape coming up soon on Mirror Universe, titled Winlow, so I promise we'll have more for you soon. "Love Song" actually comes from the aforementioned cassette.

Enjoy Your Surroundings

The Washington Generals are an American exhibition basketball team, best known for their spectacular losing streak in exhibition games against the Harlem Globetrotters. Aside from that, however, Washington Generals is Auburn, WA resident Richard Yvarra. Washington Generals make hazy psych rock that would fit quite nicely on an Underwater Peoples compilation. Yvarra says he is inspired by everything around him, and that this summery sound helps him remember days on the beach when the rain comes about. I've also been told we can expect a 7" and a CD sometime in November, so we'll keep you posted on that.

Weed Demon (DUSTLOOP REMIX)

I tend to be pretty skeptical of remixes, especially when they're of one of my favorite artists, and even more so when the song chosen is a favorite. I do, however, still make sure to check them out before writing them off, and I am so glad I did so with this one. DUSTLOOP has taken one of my favorite Wavves tracks and put such a delightful spin on it that I was floored. After you check this out and play it a few times head to his myspace to check out even more awesome tracks, some of which I might be brave enough to call Dilla-esque in quality. While you do that I'll work on getting you some more mp3s.

MP3 - Wavves - Weed Demon (DUSTLOOP REMIX)

We'll spend the winter dancing...

Why is it that all the good electro pop artists come from outside of the US? MAU (short for Man and Unable) hails from Lisbon, Portugal, and dammit this is one danceable track. They're working on a new album that is expected to drop soon, though I'm not yet sure how soon. Until then grab this fantastic track below and head to the myspace to check out some sweet remixes and a couple other tracks from the album.

Monster In My Pocket

Here is a new track from Waylon Thornton and the Heavy Hands. This one is a bit more noisy, but still sounds way awesome. Waylon has informed me that the upcoming album will be a mix of this sound and songs like "I Need Your Love". He also tells me that it will be more like a collection of songs and not so much an actual album. Regardless, it's one that I will definitely be checking out. We'll keep you posted with details.

MP3 :: Waylon Thornton and the Heavy Hands - Monster In My Pocket

Honeymaker

Seattle is notorious for the great music that comes out of it, and Sun Mantra is no exception. Sun Mantra is Matt Ojala, and this guy rocks, plain and simple. This is loud rock music that is consistently catchy and will have you crawling back for more. You can grab a copy of his 11-song cd-r from him on myspace, and all it costs you is your address. I think it's worth at least that much.

Voice Of An Old Friend

I have been obsessed with Active Child since I first mentioned them last month. I find myself regularly heading to his myspace to listen to the tracks I don't have because I honestly can't get enough. The great folks over at Mirror Universe just sent me this track from his upcoming cassette, titled Sun Rooms. "Voice Of An Old Friend" is hands down one of the happiest tracks I've heard all year. I promise this is one song you do not want to miss out on. Anyway, I'll make sure to keep you posted on the pre-order for the cassette.

MP3 :: Active Child - Voice Of An Old Friend

Wait Up for My Friend Slow

Australian natives Wizard Oz list their influences as a slew of early Nintendo video games, and it is obviously true. With lots of 8-bit glitching on top of guitars and drums along with wonderfully layered vocals you just can't go wrong. The homemade vibes from this are quite apparent, and the email even came with a hand written note. Jealous? No worries, head to the guys' myspace where you can ask for a hand made cd of your very own.

Yo La Tengo does a Take Away Show

I was just saying to Eric on Saturday how there hadn't been any good Take Away Shows in a while, and here comes Yo La Tengo in timely manner to rectify this issue. Here is the second half of the session, featuring "Sugarcube", "Periodically Double Or Triple" and a snippet of "Nothing To Hide" in all their stripped down glory. View the first half here.

Thunderbird

After releasing one of the best singles of last year and some great remixes The Golden Filter kind of disappeared for a minute. Fortunately Dummy Records has brought them back into our lives with the amazing new single "Thunderbird". Pre-order your copy here and then get your groove on to the unbelievable bliss that is The Golden Filter.

Conventional Religion

When Paul Rosales isn't busy with school, work, or helping produce tracks for bands like Tan Dollar and Pearl Harbor, he is making his own awesome songs under the moniker Wonder Wheel. He puts much of his over 30 albums worth of material on his blog for free, so you'll likely not soon go hungry for his delicious jams. Check out some of my favorite tracks below, and then head over to the Wonder Wheel blog and get your horde on. Also make sure to keep an eye out for his upcoming cassette on Woven Tones. It's guaranteed to be awesome.

Without You

The fine folks over at Leftist Nautical Antiques sent over these delightful tunes from Pullman, WA natives Yarn Owl and I couldn't be more delighted. These two particular gems come from Yarn Owl's upcoming cassette on LNA, and it's quite nice to hear something outside of the lo-fi realm in cassette form. For what it's worth the band also has a vinyl release in the works, which I'll of course keep you posted on.

Exotic On The Speaker

Here's one to surely get you on your feet and dancing. Mad Decent just put up the title track from Soulico's new album and it sounds tight. You can get the album now digitally, but if you want to actually see and hold what you're paying for, wait 'til October 6 and cop it on vinyl.

Never Been Too Worried

One thing I really hate is when an artist splits off from their band to do a solo project and it sounds exactly the same as the band. What the hell is the point of that? Oh, you agree? Well then you've nothing to worry about with Chris Thorne, aka Bigger Insides, and his full band project Tan Dollar. Tan dollar has a very catchy sound that will leave you humming and singing along even after the songs have stopped, while Bigger Insides sounds much darker; even harsh at times. Now here is the kicker: They both sound amazing! Check some tracks out below from both, and then head here and here for a few free album downloads.

Greg The Nerd

So last week the BxF ladies tipped us off on a new Frat Dad 7" coming out September 23 on Underwater Peoples. Sawyer at Underwater Peoples was awesome enough to send me the two tracks listed to appear on the 7" and they are awesome. What's cool is that the 7" will also feature a "super secret special bonus track!", so after you get your hands on those tracks you'll want to buy the 7" even more just so you can hear one more awesomely kicking track. Oh, and did I mention it's on clear vinyl? Go ahead and pop on over here to pre-order. Go ahead and stream the a-side below for now.

A Prim Encounter With Smelly Magic

I think it's safe to call Matt Sage, aka M. Pyres, a friend at this point. He just sent me something he and some friends put together under the moniker of Smelly Magic one afternoon this past summer; after a few drinks and getting properly lit. Matt describes the tracks as "blown out intense psych jams", and I couldn't have put it better myself. He also sent me a batch M. Pyres songs that he's asked me to not put up just yet. I know some of them are gonna end up on the Julian Lynch split, and I can't tell you how excited I am for that to come out, or for me to be able to share them with you.

Some Do Float

Bathetic Records is quickly becoming one of my favorite labels out there. I've already professed my love for Cough Cool and Nude Beach, and now I have a couple projects from the label's owners that turn out to be just as amazing. Wild Safari is William Cody Watson and Jon Bath (not sure if that's his real name...), the two gentleman behind Bathetic, and Pink Priest is Watson's solo gig. The best thing about these two projects is that I feel like both have names that really just explain the sound as simply as possible. They've been kind enough to give us several tracks for your listening pleasure, so grab 'em while they're hot and then head over to Bathetic Records to bolster your collection of solid jams.

Astro Black Ghost, Speak To Me!

A month or so ago I stumbled upon High Wolf on the fantastic Weed Temple. Gabon from Winged Sun and Animal Totem from Not Not Fun are both likely to show up as a duo for my top albums of this year, so take notice. The best part of it is that High Wolf seems to just make one amazing track after another. Friendship Bracelet recently posted this track from the newest release on Winged Sun titled Incapulco, so go ahead and grab it along with the aforementioned albums (EPs? Idk). You can also find several other amazing releases through the myspace.

This will never end 'cause I want more...

Last week I told you about the mysterious Village Riot. Now today two more tracks have been dropped into my mailbox; two remixes to be specific. The first is a remix of "If I Had A Heart" by Fever Ray, and the second is of "Family Tree" by TV On The Radio. Both Tracks are incredibly infectious and more than worth checking out.

Arlington Baby

Our buddy Tim Perry, aka Weed Diamond, tweeted out this new tune, which I'm assuming will be on his upcoming cassette from Mirror Universe. I'm especially smitten with this track because Tim has managed to slow things down and give us an incredibly nostalgic feeling that seems so simple and yet so full of meaning. Every layer added to the track is one more memory, intertwined at some unforeseen core.

Nude Beach

The other day I told you about Cough Cool. What's weird is that I somehow missed his full band project, Nude Beach, which seems to be getting some really cool attention. Check out the band's self-titled track below, and discover one of the best songs I've heard this year. Nude Beach also has an upcoming cassette on Bathetic, so we'll keep you posted on that as well.

A Soldier With Long Legs

Sensual Harassment describe themselves as "a Reptilian Humanoid alliance utilizing sonic mind control through beat-driven psych-pop. In their debut broadcast, the scaly Brooklyn trio seamlessly shape-shifts from reverb-drenched post-Apocalyptic new wave to epileptic space disco." I don't know what the fuck any of that means, but this shit sounds way cool, so check it out. You can also grab stems for "Daddy Long Legs" here if you wanna get your remix on. Just make sure you let me hear it.

We Don't Have Time To Scream

Red Liquid is a psychedelic/post punk band based out of Seattle. Myspace told me so. They sent me over their most recent EP, titled 2CAP vs. 2PAC IN HELL (STALLIONAIRES), and it's some pretty rad stuff. Not one track is under six-minutes in length, and one actually goes beyond eleven, so definitely take some time to listen. And hell, if you don't enjoy it I'll give you a full cash refund!

Rainbow God

I think myself to be fairly terrible at labeling music when it comes to genre's, so I tend to stay away from that. From the very start of Cough Cool's "Rainbow God" I get the feeling of something massively wild (Tasmanian Devil?) being trapped in a box. It's a sound that wants to be exploded wildly for all the world to hear and yet only has the privilege of making it's way through my headphones. I know that really doesn't give you much on what the song actually sounds like, so just check it out. If you dig what you hear, both tracks below will be featured on the upcoming Bathetic Records release Buy Some Dust. Also keep your eyes peeled for releases on Woven Tones and Abandon Ship.

Phrazes For The Young

A while back it was announced that Julian Casablancas of the Strokes is releasing a solo album, titled Phrazes For The Young. I'm now hearing that the album will be dropping October 20. Here's to hoping this information isn't completely unfounded. The information can be found on Casablancas' facebook page.
Julian's debut album, "Phrazes for the Young" will be released in the UK on October 19 and in the US on October 20th. You'll be able to pre-order the record at www.juliancasablancas.com...details will be posted before the release.
Oh, and here's a little preview to hold you over until we can get something more solid.

Another Likely Story of Indians

GvsB posted this remix of Au Revoir Simone's "Another Likely Story" by Neon Indian today. Shortly afterward Ed Droste mentioned how good the remix was, and how excited he is to hear the Neon Indian remix of "Cheerleader". Trust us Ed, we're pretty excited too.

I have no idea why I'm only just now catching on to BLK JKS, but I apologize profusely from keeping this from my readers. I'm not even going to attempt describing their sound, although Aquarium Drunkard does a pretty good job. Just listen to this track from their recently released Secretly Canadian debut, titled After Robots. Then go buy a copy here, or hit up your local independent record store if you need some fresh air.

It's A New Day

This track from Village Riot just dropped into my inbox, apparently from a friend of the artist. He describes it as "really swampy, hazy avant folktronica stuff", and I suppose that's as good a way to put it. Point is, this track is really good. I'll try to bring you more once I know some more.

All Of Denver Is Wasted

Nate over at Weekly Tape Deck just forwarded me an e-mail from Mirror Universe Tapes containing a new track from Weed Diamond's upcoming cassette with them. Once again Tim manages to create another amazing jam. This one is a very laid back tune for the majority of it, giving you one last glimpse of that lazy summer vibe just before fall sets into full swing. The tape should be dropping around the end of the month, so keep your eyes peeled.

Summer In The City

Black Casino And The Ghost is London-based Italian duo Elisa Zoot and Ariel Lerner. They recently dropped this amazing cover of The Lovin' Spoonful's "Summer In The City" into my inbox, and I was blown away. I'm positive that you don't want to miss out on this.

Consider Me, Ghost

I first stumbled on to M. Pyres when Matt commented on my write up of those Denver Show And Tell jams. I was immediately enamored by their sound and asked for a few mp3s to share here on GOTC. I got a whole lot more than I could have expected. The entire M. Pyres catalog is available at Fir Traders Union for free download. Now here is the crazy thing, apparently the beauty captured in these tracks is the old sound. The band is currently wrapping up their new album (Matt says to give them about a month), and they are all very excited about the new sound. There is also an M. Pyres/Julian Lynch split apparently in the works, so we'll keep you posted on that as well. Anyway, until then, check out some choice tracks I've selected below, and then go grab a lot more at FTU.

Stormy Late Fall

A few weeks ago our friend Nate over at Weekly Tape Deck turned us on to Chicago based Campfires. Campfires is currently just Jeff Walls, though he is currently working on putting together a live line-up and getting a small tour going. I've not been able to stop playing these tracks since he gave them to me the other day, so beware: these tunes are addictive. Summer Breaks And Back To Fall

Every year we put together a mix of some rad tunes that we're digging over here at Gravity Records. Usually we do them around Christmas, but fuck it, right? Summer is winding down and we'd like to keep that happy party vibe going strong. We've got tracks by Atlas Sound, Jay Reatard, Nancy Sinatra, Real Estate, The Love Language and many more. So without further ado, we give Summer Breaks And Back To Fall.

I Wanna Know If You Want Me

My friend Kathi just turned me on to Vancouver's Indian Wars, and I thought I'd pass them on. Indian Wars would fit nicely in a show with King Khan & BBQ Show or Black Lips to give you an idea of their sound. The band is currently recording new material and working on a split 10" with Fungi Girls, so we'll keep an eye out for that.

GOTC favorite Pearl Harbor just put a new song up on their myspace. "Luv Goon" is a very dreamy song that is perfect for a chill evening bike ride along the boardwalk.
